Homebuilding is
just one facet of the company's impact on the Pikes Peak region. Under
the umbrella organization of Tibbetts & Company, the family
also operates Pikes Peak Excavating and Mountain Management Company;
and to its credit has just about every kind of building project under
it belt, from light commercial projects and extravagant custom homes to
full neighborhood developments and affordable housing complexes.
The
company began when Ron Tibbetts, a master carpenter, custom homebuilder
and baker from Butte, Montana, moved his family to Colorado Springs in
1968. He quickly received his general contractor's license and soon
involved his wife, Shirlee, and three sons, Dan, Gary and Don, in his
business. While they were in high school, he taught his sons the
importance of learning many trades, staring with cabinet installations,
framing and trim. They helped put the finishing touches on hundreds of
apartments and houses before all three committed to attend Colorado
State University. Through college, they continued to help with the
family business, while earning degrees in civil engineering and
industrial construction management.
By the
1980's, on top of its already thriving single-family home business,
Tibbetts & Company was also one of the largest builders of
affordable multi-family housing complexes in the state. The family
began constructing apartment complexes in 1979 in Colorado and New
Mexico, and soon expanded their scope to include Montana and Arizona.
The company took responsibility for all phases of the complexes, from
gaining city zoning and approval to building, managing and maintaining
the structures. Working with government rural housing projects, it
built 22 affordable housing complexes with more than 700 dwelling units
in 15 communities. Tibbetts created the mountain Management Company to
oversee the complexes and Shirlee overtook the general manager/owner
responsibilities, which she still maintains today.
An
example of the company's attention to quality is the extensive soil
investigations it does on potential building sites. Because the
stability of the ground is crucial to long-term structure durability,
and because soil quality is a big concern in Colorado, Tibbetts
& Company formed its Pikes Peak Excavating division just one
year after establishing Legendary Homes. By bringing excavating
in-house, the company can keep control over quality, ensuring every
project starts on a solid foundation and will stand the test of time.
The
quality of work that Pikes Peak Excavating performs, combined with its
vast fleet of heavy equipment, have made it a competitive force in the
excavating and earthwork industries. Along with its projects with
Legendary Homes, the company works extensively with other developers on
housing, light commercial and development projects, and performs
investigative and technical work for soil engineers.
During
its years of service in Colorado, the Tibbetts family has kept its
commitment to the region, maintaining its presence through ups and
downs, including the gas moratorium of the '70s and the economic
slowdown of the '80s. And while they've enjoyed the strong market of
the last decade, they don't plan on doing business any differently
should that change.
